Bipolar Disorder and Managing Depressive Episodes

In a video from the Brain and Cognition Discovery Foundation, Nassir Ghaemi, MD, MPH, discusses managing depressive episodes in the bipolar spectrum. He starts off by breaking down manic depressive illness compared with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, going through other types of depressive conditions and varying terminology for these conditions over the years. Dr. Ghaemi dives into diagnosis and the mood episode spectrum that ranges from pure depression to pure mania, with mixed states of agitated depression, depressive mixed state, and dysphoric mania in the middle. The types of mixed states, described by Dr. Ghaemi, are DSM-IV, DSM-V, Bipolarity Specifier, Mixed Depression, and Temperament as Modifier of Mood Episodes. He then goes into detail on research studies on psychomotor activation, mixed depression, and phenomenology.
