Guidelines on Acute and Long-term Therapies of Mixed States in Bipolar Disorder

The World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry presents an overview of evidence related to acute and long-term treatment of bipolar mixed states in adults. Data for the guidelines were assessed related to the acute treatment of manic and depressive symptoms in those who are bipolar mixed in addition to data related to prevention of mixed recurrences following an index episode of any type or recurrence of any type following a mixed episode. Manic symptoms in bipolar mixed states showed to be responsive to therapy with various atypical antipsychotics. The evidence for depressive symptoms is much more limited than evidence for treatment of manic symptoms. There is a need for confirmative studies to implement the DSM-5 specifier with mixed features concept.
