The Journey of Antipsychotic Use in Mania

On the Carlat Psychiatry Podcast, Chris Aiken, MD, and Kellie Newsome, PMHNP, discuss the journey of antipsychotic use in mania and the myth of the idea that you can predict how therapy works based on its class. They also discuss how the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition came to fruition. The first use of antipsychotics was in the 1950s, with the use of them becoming very popular in the 1960s, but then depleting in the 1970s. They then rose again in the early 2000s, with now antipsychotics being high on the list of popular therapies in bipolar disorder. There was a new era of antipsychotics. From then, there are now over 20 years research on atypical antipsychotics that attempted to calm manic highs.
